Understanding Pain

  • Share:
Name: Understanding Pain
Date: October 16, 2019
Time: 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM EDT
Event Description:

This lecture will explore the phenomenon of pain that individuals experience in different forms and provide information about the prevalence of pain, in the U.S., and beyond. There will be some time spent briefly discussing the cost of pain in the health care system. The lecture will discuss the “vicious cycle” aspects of  pain that many individuals experience – this being, a series of reactions when experiencing pain that often starts with catastrophizing the injury or pain, leading to fear of pain movement/reinjury, leading to avoidance and hypervigilance, which often leads to disuse, depression, stress, and paradoxically more pain.

One goal of this lecture is to elaborate some recent initiatives led by groups such as the Institute of Medicine and The Department of Health and Human Services that are encouraging physicians to understand pain as a complex phenomenon that can be remediated in ways beyond either prescribing drugs (often opioids) and/or surgery. The lecture will discuss how remediation can be enhanced if one uses an Integrated Pain Management Approach (some refer to this as a Biopsychosocial Approach to Pain Management). In this model, the patient is an active participant in the remediation of his/her pain, which often helps break the vicious cycle aspect of pain noted above.

Another goal of this lecture is to demonstrate how exercise professionals can offer programming for clients with a range of pain disorders. The lecture will point out how acute injuries can be mediated by providing a positive adaptive change to the damaged tissue and to restore/improve movement mechanics. When the condition is more chronic, the training programs are designed to get the client to trust his/her body again by restoring movement mechanics, increasing range of motion, improving confidence, and reducing stress and anxiety. The lecture will discuss the role of trainers as coaches in the remediation of pain and we will note that this form of intervention fits well with an Integrated Pain Management approach to the phenomenon of pain.
