Event Description:
This two-hour workshop is designed for current users of Microsoft Word who also need a familiarity with Google Docs for purposes of collaboration.
The class includes an introductory section on Google Drive, the online storage location for Google Docs. You’ll learn how to install Google Drive on a PC or Mac and how to set up a local Google Drive folder, which will automatically synchronize with Google Drive on the Web.
The class will then focus on using Documents, the Google Docs word processor. Users familiar with Microsoft Word will find much that is familiar, along with some limitations. You’ll learn to create new documents in the Google Docs format, as well as how to work with Word documents in Google Docs and how to convert Word documents to Google Docs. You’ll learn basic formatting and editing techniques in Google Docs, such as setting paragraph styles and line spacing, and you’ll learn to use the Paint Format Tool to copy formatting easily. You’ll also learn to edit a Google document by adding images, comments, and headers and footers. You’ll practice working with the revision history to view older versions of documents, and you’ll learn how to translate a Google document into another language. You’ll also learn how to add page numbers and page breaks, and how to set up a document for printing.
The class will also cover best practices for using Google Docs. Since it is a shared online tool, you’ll need to be mindful of issues related to safeguarding confidential data. You’ll learn the difference between viewing and editing, and how to set permission levels for collaborators. You’ll also learn simple tips that will help you avoid accidentally overwriting data or accidentally publishing confidential data.
