Event Description:

Join us again this year for Active Aging in Valley. We have a great lineup of talks, workshops and panel discussion. Students from the Umass Department of Kinesiology will be offering free health screenings again this year. And we will have lots of exhibits to visit.

Dave Madsen, News Anchor for Western Mass News will introduce our event this year. The opening Keynote Talk is “Exercise as Medicine: Cardio-Metabolic Health in Older Adults” by Stuart Chipkin, MD, an endocrinologist with the Valley Medical Group. The closing Keynote talk is “The Power of Sleep for Healthy Aging” by Rebecca Spencer, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at UMass Amherst .

Workshops include:

  • “Fitness on a Fixed Income,” Judi LaBranche, Lecturer, UMass Department of Kinesiology

  • “Resistance, Balance & Back Care,” Tom St. Laurent, Lecturer, UMass Department of Kinesiology

  • “Eating Right for Healthy Aging,” Lisa Troy, Assistant Professor, School of Public Health and Health Sciences, The Commonwealth Honors College Professor of Nutrition at UMass

  • “To Jumpstart Your Health Routine, Be Mindful, The Science & Practice of Mindfulness,” Shalini Bahl, Downtown Mindfulness

  • “Maintaining Balance as We Age,” Beth Bronner, MPT, Cooley Dickinson Hospital

  • “Supporting Pelvic Health as We Age,” Carolyn Bentley, DPT, M.Ed, Cooley Dickinson Hospital

  • “Healthy Aging for Women,” Sarah Witkowski, Assistant Professor & Director of the Molecular & Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory, Department of Kinesiology, UMass

There will also be a panel discussion: “Don't Just Sit There, Stories of Success” — Hear how some people have changed their lives with exercise.

And we will conclude with a great concert by the Heart of the Valley Chorus.
