Workshop: Maintaining a WordPress Website
Presented by: Pioneer Training
This class is intended for people who are currently maintaining or building a WordPress website. The class will meet for four sessions, and part of each session will be devoted to working on your own website, with assistance from the instructor.
The class will start with a tour of the WordPress dashboard, including tips on navigating the available options. You’ll learn how to customize a site with a logo, tagline, front page, menus and color scheme. You’ll learn how to change the theme, search for themes, and upload a new theme. The instructor will also demonstrate three popular themes and their accompanying theme options, including responsiveness to mobile devices. You’ll learn how to upload images, videos and other media to your site, and how to insert them into pages as objects or links. The class will also cover the image editing tools built into WordPress. Next, you’ll learn the difference between posts and pages, as well as how to create and edit both. You’ll practice editing a navigation menu, and learn how to add pages to a menu, manually or automatically. You'll learn how to add a contact page to your website, with a Google map, contact form, and links to text or call you from a mobile phone. You’ll practice using different layouts with widgets and sidebars, and you’ll learn how to search for and install plug-ins to add functionality to your site. The class will also include a discussion of SEO (search engine optimization), as well as a demonstration of a popular SEO plug-in (SEO Yoast). Finally, you'll also learn how to manage comments for blog-type websites, as well as how to sign up subscribers to your site.
Participants are asked to bring their own laptops, as well as login credentials for their websites.
